Juxera

It was coined in July 2014 by the Tumblr user Wulfgendur, also known as Ren, who coined proxvir, the near-male counterpart, in the same act. The pair is symmetrical by design.

What the record holds

Very little, and saying so is the honest description. Juxera has an entry on the Nonbinary Wiki and one on the LGBTQIA+ Wiki, and a definition on a dictionary site's gender and sexuality glossary. There is no academic literature, no dictionary of record, and no survey figure: the Gender Census records it at write-in level only, meaning some people entered it in a free-text box and it has never crossed the threshold to become a checkbox.

That is a statement about documentation and not about the people using the word. A term can be precisely dated, precisely attributed, and still have almost nothing written about it, and roughly a fifth of this catalogue is in that position.

How the word is used

Grammatically it works like an adjective, in the same way male and female do. The wikis are firm that one says I am juxera rather than I am a juxera, on the model of the words it sits beside. The wikis note that a juxera person may also describe themselves as third gender, on the reasoning that a whole gender outside the binary qualifies, and that many sit under the non-binary umbrella as well.

Why a term like this is worth cataloguing

Juxera is the ordinary case for a large part of this vocabulary rather than an oddity. A word coined on a named blog on a known date, adopted by an unknown number of people, and never picked up by any dictionary or survey is what most of the microlabel tail looks like. Recording the coinage and then saying plainly that the record stops there is more useful than either inflating it or leaving it out.

The 2014 cluster is striking on its own. A large share of the terms in this catalogue with a datable coinage were made on Tumblr in and around 2014, several of them through the same archive blog, and juxera and proxvir were a matched pair inside it. The contrast with a term like Hijra, which has no coinage date at all because the category predates anybody writing it down, is the whole range this catalogue covers.
