Agenderflux
Agenderflux describes a gender that is fully Agender throughout, with fluctuating levels of masculinity, femininity or another gender quality laid over it. What rises and falls is the connection to those qualities, not the identity. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki, which supplies the definition most other pages work from, is explicit on the point: an agenderflux person never identifies as male, female or any other non-agender gender at any point in the cycle.

What fluctuates when agenderflux fluctuates
The wiki draws a line between gender qualities and genders, and the whole term rests on it. Femininity, masculinity, androgyny and outherinity are qualities; man, woman and the non-binary identities are genders. An agenderflux person's connection to the first set moves while their position in the second set does not, and the movement shows up in how they relate to gendered concepts and in how they feel they should present.
Two patterns are given, and they sit at opposite ends of the same definition. In the first, a person feels null, neutral or agenrine most of the time, and sometimes feels that they want or ought to present in a gendered way. In the second, a person rarely or never feels null at all, and still fluctuates in which qualities they connect to. The range is open: masculine, feminine, somewhere between, or something outside that axis altogether, as long as it is gendered. A person may also feel the qualities of more than one gender at the same time.
Two narrower labels sit inside the same space. The wiki notes that an agenderflux person may experience genders such as aboy and agirl, neither of which it defines on that page.
Why agenderflux is not a presentation preference
The definition of record makes a specific claim about how the fluctuation is felt, and it makes it in order to head off a particular misreading. An agenderflux person may experience dysphoria when dressed, addressed or treated in a way that does not match the level of masculinity or femininity felt that day. The wiki offers that against the reading of the term as a description of clothes and manner, and its phrasing is careful: the fluctuation is not necessarily always just a presentation preference, which leaves room for people whose experience of it is closer to one.
The misreading it is guarding against is easy to find. MasterClass, whose explainer on the term was last updated on 31 January 2023, describes agenderflux people as feeling the tones of the gender binaries and moving between them in style and energy. Style and energy is exactly the framing the wiki spends a sentence rejecting, and the two accounts sit side by side in the sources for this entry with nothing between them to settle the point.
Who coined agenderflux and when
Nobody has established it, and the three accounts on file are not reconcilable. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki places the term before 15 May 2017 and gives the coiner as a Tumblr user who is currently unknown. MasterClass dates the coinage to a Tumblr post of 2014 and identifies neither the post nor the user. The Nonbinary Wiki's agender page names perfectlybrokenbones and marks the attribution as needing a citation.
The gap between the earliest and the latest of those is three years, which for a word of this kind is most of its life. Nothing on file tests any of the three claims against the others, and no page cites a post that can be opened.
Why agenderflux keeps being swapped with librafluid
The confusion is documented on the term's own page, at length, and it runs in every direction. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki records that agenderflux has consistently been mixed up with librafluid, Agenderfluid and libraflux, that many people have used two or more of the four as synonyms, and that definitions have been switched and combined between them. The confusion reached the flags as well, so a person may hold one definition and fly a flag made for a different one.
The page then does something unusual for a community wiki, which is to state its own editorial position. Its definition follows the earliest findable definitions of the term rather than the commonest current ones. It says in the same breath that this is not the only definition in use, that some people describe something closer to librafluid and still call it agenderflux, and that others hold the definition on that page while using a different word for it.
A second argument is narrower and older. The wiki records it as contested whether an agenderflux person needs fluctuating connections to more than one gender quality, such as femininity and masculinity together, or whether one quality is enough, such as a connection to masculinity that moves between nothing and something. The page marks the question as open and does not take a side.
Where the agenderflux flags disagree
Three designs are on file and they do not describe the same thing. The first, by the Reddit user It-Is-I-Username, dates from 19 June 2020 and glosses its colours: black for the absence of colour in terms of light, white for the absence of colour in terms of pigment, and then orange for femininity in a non-binary way, green for masculinity in a non-binary way, and yellow for the two combined. The scheme puts the fluctuating qualities in colour and the agender constant in the achromatic stripes.

The citrus flag, based on the citrus agender flag, reads its stripes through fruit and community rather than through gender qualities: leaves and working towards agender liberation, limes and agender friendship, lemons and gender joy, blood oranges and agender diversity, with gold for dysphoria and acceptance. The third flag, by Asphyn Falwell, carries no date on the page at all, and the wiki says it might have been created for agenderflux but has also been used as a libragender flag.
MasterClass describes a fourth thing again. Its account of the agenderflux flag has seven stripes running black, grey, white, a pink and blue gradient, white, grey and black, which matches none of the three the wiki holds.
What the agenderflux record does not hold
No academic literature under this name, and no checkbox on any survey. The Gender Census, which is where a word of this size gets counted at all, reaches words that small only as free text: its 2021 round drew 44,583 usable responses, offered 30 identity words to tick, and collected everything else through the boxes people typed into, which that year produced 7,994 distinct entries, one for roughly every six participants. A term joins the checkbox list by being typed in by more than one per cent of an age group, and agenderflux is nowhere near that threshold, so what exists for it is a count of write-ins inside a self-selected community sample, a number that cannot be scaled up to any country.
What the record does hold is a charity listing and a commercial explainer. The British charity akt places agenderflux under the agender umbrella in its resources for agender people, defined as identifying as agender while having fluctuations between feeling feminine or masculine, alongside genderblank, genderfree and polyagender. The Nonbinary Wiki's agender page files it in a longer alphabetical list of genderless identities, between agenderfluid and agenderfluix, with a one-line definition and a request for a citation.
