Agenderflux
Agenderflux describes a gender that is fully Agender throughout, with fluctuating levels of masculinity, femininity or another gender quality laid over it. What rises and falls is the connection to those qualities, not the identity. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki is explicit on the point: an agenderflux person never identifies as male, female or any other non-agender gender at any point in the cycle.
That places the word beside Genderflux, which moves the intensity of a gender rather than of a gender quality, and beside agenderfluid, whose base is agender but whose identity does move.
Why agenderflux is not a presentation preference
The definition of record makes a specific claim about how the fluctuation is felt. An agenderflux person may experience dysphoria when dressed, addressed or treated in a way that does not match the level of masculinity or femininity felt that day, which is what the wiki offers against reading the term as a description of clothes and manner. A person on this pattern may also use narrower labels such as aboy or agirl.
Who coined agenderflux and when
Nobody has established it. The LGBTQIA+ Wiki places the term before 15 May 2017 and gives the coiner as an unknown Tumblr user. The Nonbinary Wiki's agender page names perfectlybrokenbones and marks the attribution as uncited. MasterClass, in an explainer last updated in 2023, dates the coinage to a Tumblr post of 2014 without identifying it. The three accounts have not been reconciled anywhere on file.
What the community disagrees about
The LGBTQIA+ Wiki records the argument in its own article. The first question is whether an agenderflux person has to feel more than one gender quality fluctuating, or whether one is enough, such as a connection to masculinity that moves between nothing and something. The second is the definition itself: the wiki says its text follows the earliest findable definitions, that other definitions are in use, and that agenderflux, librafluid, agenderfluid and libraflux have been mixed up often enough that the flags have been swapped along with the meanings.
What the record for agenderflux holds
Fragments with dates on them. A flag was designed by the Reddit user It-Is-I-Username on 19 June 2020, and a citrus version by the Tumblr user Drachenauge on 9 November 2024. The British charity akt lists agenderflux under the agender umbrella, defined as identifying as agender while having fluctuations between feeling feminine or masculine. No academic literature covers the term, and the sources on file carry no survey count for it.
